Once your dog has mastered basics like sit, shake, and lie down, you can build on those skills to tackle a few new tricks. Our new series, "Dog Tricks Made Easy," will teach you and your pup how to do just that, through short, informative how-to videos (starring our adorable office dogs). Check out the first installment here.
The "Leave It"
Dog Tricks Made Easy
In 3 easy steps, we’ll show you how to teach your dog to “Leave It”.
Step 1: Show your dog a treat, close your hand around it, and say “Leave it”. Your dog might try to get to the treat or stare intently at the back of your hand. The second there’s a break in his attention, give him a yummy treat from your other hand and praise him. This will teach him to look to you in order to “earn” the treat. Repeat this as often as you need to!
Step 2: Place the treat down and cover the treat with your index and say “Leave it”. Again, praise and reward your pup once he looks away from the treat and up at you.
Step 3: Continue practicing the “Leave it” command until you can place the treat in front of your pup without them reaching for it. Remember, be patient and have fun with it!
